All employees who need to provide first aid treatment in case of extreme risk workplace injuries and emergency situations as prescribed by the Occupational Health and Safety Act No. 85 of 1993.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The Combined First Aid Level 1, 2 & 3 course will enable the first responder to react to emergencies at an advanced first aid level, until the arrival of more professional emergency personnel.

Module 1: Introduction to first aid
Module 2: The basic anatomy and physiology of the human body
Module 3: The major organ systems
Module 4: Emergency scene management
Module 5: Shock
Module 6: Airway and breathing emergencies
Module 7: CPR
Module 8: Wounds and bleeding
Module 9: Bites and stings
Module 10: Bone and joint injuries
Module 11: Other first aid emergencies
Module 12: Environmental emergencies
Module 13: Emergency childbirth and miscarriage
Module 14: Mental health awareness
Module 15: Behavioural & disabled patients
Module 16: Communicable diseases

Theoretical assessment

Practical assessment
Scene survey.
Primary survey.
Secondary survey.
Recovery position.
CPR and AED.
Chocking – conscious patient.

COURSE OUTCOMES

Students credited with this unit standard are able to:

  • Explaining the principles of advanced first aid in emergencies.
  • Demonstrating an advanced level of preparedness to deal with sudden illness or emergency.
  • Assessing and managing an emergency scene/disaster.
  • Describing the anatomy and explaining the physiology of the human body systems in terms of injury or sudden illness.
  • Applying primary first aid for all age groups according to accepted current first aid protocols.
  • Explaining and managing shock.
